The long winter wait is finally over! Today marks the official arrival of spring, and while the air still holds a classic Maine chill, the energy on the southern coast is unmistakably shifting. There’s no better place to witness this seasonal awakening than in the iconic, charming town of Kennebunkport.
While summer is Kennebunkport’s headliner, spring is its best-kept secret, a time of quiet beauty, locals catching up on the streets, and the palpable excitement of businesses throwing open their doors. We spent the day soaking in the revitalization of this coastal gem.
🌅 Morning: Awakening in Dock Square
We began our spring celebration right in the heart of town: Dock Square. The morning air was crisp enough to warrant a warm layer, but the sky was a pale, hopeful blue. The town feels like it's rubbing its eyes after a long nap.
· A Local Brew: Our first stop was Mornings in Paris for a steaming latte. Sitting by the window, we watched the town wake up. Locals traded stories of the winter, and a few other early spring visitors browsed the freshly stocked window displays.

· Curious Browsing: While some shops are still on winter hours, many are beginning their season. We wandered into Daytrip Society for some unique, nature-inspired gifts and popped into Abacus to admire local craftsmanship and of course we had to check out Scalawags Pet Boutique for a new spring sweater for our four-legged family member. There’s a wonderful sense of discovery when you aren’t battling summer crowds.
· Historical Exploration: This is when we would have enjoyed a fun and informative 1 mile stroll around town with Outatime Tours had it been just a tad later in the season.
🌊 Mid-Day: The Stunning Ocean Avenue Drive
No visit to Kennebunkport is complete without a journey down Ocean Avenue, and on the first day of spring, the views are particularly dramatic. The rugged coastline feels raw and powerful, unmodified by the influx of summer activity.

· Parson’s Way: We parked near Colony Beach and walked a portion of Parson’s Way. This scenic path offers front-row seats to the Atlantic splashing against the granite cliffs. We stood at Spouting Rock and Blowing Cave, listening to the sea roar, a sound that feels more thunderous in the quiet season.

· Walker’s Point: Looking across the cove at the famous Walker’s Point, the summer compound of the Bush family. Seeing it set against the stark, beautiful backdrop of the early spring ocean is always a powerful sight.
🍽️ Lunch: A Taste of the Season
Appetites worked up, we headed back toward Dock Square for a quintessential Maine lunch. With so many great places to choose from, we had quite a debate;
· The Clam Shack: You can’t talk about Kennebunkport food without mentioning The Clam Shack. They will be our first stop when they open for the season in May.
· Allison’s Restaurant: A non-pretentious, cozy Dock Square staple. Their lobster bisque poutine and Lobster Roll Trio are must haves when visiting!
· Pilot House: Known for “where the locals go” for decades, their new, beautiful building is a quintessential harbor-side restaurant with comfort food of the coast.

· Ultimately, we agreed upon The Boathouse: The gorgeous water views dockside can’t be beat. The Fish and Chips for me and the Lobster Roll for my companion tasted like Summer was just around the corner.
🌲 Afternoon: Tranquility at the Monastery Grounds
For the afternoon, we craved a bit more serenity and wanting to work off our fabulous lunch, we headed just across the river to the Franciscan Monastery grounds.
· Spiritual Stroll: This 60-acre sanctuary is open to the public and is absolute magic in the spring. The walking paths wind through formal gardens, past peaceful shrines, and down to the banks of the Kennebunk River. It was incredibly quiet, just the sound of our boots on the path and the occasional call of an early spring bird. It's the perfect place for reflection and to appreciate the renewal of nature.

🍻 Evening: Raising a Glass to Spring
This is, again, where we would enjoy discovering hidden gems with an Outatime Tours historical walk through the past of Kennebunkport. Alas, we are looking forward to that in May!
Alas, as the sun began to dip, casting golden light across the harbor, we looked for the perfect spot to toast the new season.
· Kennebunkport Brewing Company at Federal Jack’s: The brewery is located right underneath Federal Jack’s, this is the birthplace of Shipyard Ale. They offer a flight of local brews if you can’t decide on one and have a relaxed, friendly atmosphere.
· Batson River Brewing Company: Their signature cocktails and craft beer served with a view up on a hill is a perfectly relaxing way to end the day.

· Although those two are great choices, we went to our new go-to neighborhood pub, Ryan’s Corner House Irish Pub: Locals and first-time visitors feel like they’re at a friends house at Ryan’s. A perfectly poured Guinness and a creamy Espresso Martini was just what we needed to cap off a perfect welcome to Spring in Kennebunkport!
We hope you enjoyed following along on our spring adventure! Kennebunkport in the "tweener" season offers a unique charm you won’t find at any other time of year. What are your favorite spring traditions in Maine? Share them in the comments below!
